Desk Details: Dean Allen, CCO/CMO at Mad Engine
The global licensing community is guided by an incredible group of senior executives whose diverse backgrounds and creative energy drive innovation and excellence. Each month, we’re profiling one of these professionals in this ongoing series.
How do you start your day?
I try to walk a few times a week while catching up on emails. Then I get the biggest green tea that Starbucks has!
What’s one item you always need on your desk?
Usually too many pens, and too many screens.
What is something you learned at a previous job that prepared you for your current role?
Being a former retailer, I had to learn quickly that you place your bets on companies that execute at the highest level. Anyone can talk the talk, but at the end of the day you must deliver on your promises.
What is your favorite aspect of your current role?
I love watching our team’s passion as they continue to push the boundaries in creativity and innovation in each category we service.
What is one thing you would change about the licensing industry?
More time for collaboration with our partners.
If you had an extra hour in your workday, how would you use it?
I would spend it with my family!
What is one thing you need to do every day to feel accomplished?
Making sure people around me know that they are appreciated. It’s a hard thing to do when we are busy and stressed, but it’s important.
Are you a carry-on or checked bag traveler?
Carry-on. Land and go!
What do you always have in your suitcase on a work trip?
Way too many chargers. If you ever need one, you know who to call!
If you weren’t in licensing, what would you be doing?
Teaching and coaching sports was the plan. Maybe one day!
What advice would you give to yourself 10 years ago?
Travel to every country possible!
What are you most excited about moving forward?
My team has accomplished so much in the past year, and I am so proud of their accomplishments! Moving forward, I am excited to work alongside of them and continue to change the licensed apparel and accessories game.
