Desk Details: Gaye Dean, VP of Retail Development, North America at Miraculous Corp.

The global licensing community is guided by an incredible group of senior executives whose diverse backgrounds and creative energy drive innovation and excellence. Each month, we’re profiling one of these professionals in this ongoing series.

How do you start your day?
I like to start my day with exercise. I head to the gym and either kickbox or do some strength training with bands. The workout really clears my head and gets me ready for my day. It also releases endorphins that put me in a great mood, and I feel good that I have already accomplished a goal!

What’s one item you always need on your desk?
I am a pen (preferably black ink) and notebook gal! I love a spiral notebook that lets the pages lay flat since I am left-handed. I love jotting down thoughts, tasks, and notes. It is a wonderful feeling when I “check” things off that task list.

What unique skill or characteristic do you bring to your team?
I believe I bring a lot of passion to our team. I love the Miraculous brand and get excited to bounce ideas off the team, no matter how crazy they are. I love sharing inspiration with the team to get us thinking—why not try Miraculous in this space?

What is something you learned at a previous job that prepared you for your current role?
Being scrappy. When you work for smaller companies, you often wear many hats. I am not afraid to pitch in and help the team.

What is your favorite aspect of your current role?
I love having the opportunity to present the Miraculous brand to retailers and partners. When you look at all the great things about this brand—like the beautiful animation, high content ratings, our amazing promotional partnerships, awesome products, and our vast social media presence—everyone gets excited and wants to jump on board!

What is one thing you would change about the licensing industry?
We work in an incredibly special industry where people genuinely care and people are willing to help people out with whatever they need, be it looking for a job, a contact, networking ideas, or more. I’d like to see this come to life even more as a community as some of our more experienced executives look for what’s next for them. I will say I have been truly fortunate in this space, so hit me up if you need anything from me!

If you had an extra hour in your workday, how would you use it?
I would like to spend more time doing store checks at retail. There are so many retailers doing amazing things highlighting new products, including unique display ideas, using technology in store, and just plain being innovative. It would help me find ways to be more creative in my retail pitches.

What is one thing you need to do every day to feel accomplished?
I need to read every unread email in my inbox. I may need some time to think before I respond to an email, but when I close my laptop, every email has at least been read.

Are you a carry-on or checked bag traveler?
For business travel I am carry-on 99% of the time. I love avoiding the baggage carousel at all costs. I am also really into packing cubes—they’re a game changer, people!

What do you always have in your suitcase on a work trip?
I love a good trail mix that includes peanuts, raisins, butterscotch chips, and M&Ms to snack on in my room.

If you weren’t in licensing, what would you be doing?
I think I would be an event planner. I love organizing and throwing parties and events. I am a planner by nature and love putting extra details into events to make people smile!

What advice would you give to yourself 10 years ago?
Love what you do, but do not be afraid to move on. Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side of that fence.

What are you most excited about moving forward?
Watching the Miraculous brand grow at retail in the U.S.
