Desk Details: Jennifer Gileno, Head of Licensing and Retail Development for Mattel Canada
The global licensing community is guided by an incredible group of senior executives whose diverse backgrounds and creative energy drive innovation and excellence. Each month, we’re profiling one of these professionals in this ongoing series.
How do you start your day?
I am a creative of habit, so each morning begins with coffee, yoga, and a review of short-term and long-term goals (both personal and professional). I keep a notebook that I review every morning to ensure I’m on track.
What’s one item you always need on your desk?
My notebook.
What unique skill or characteristic do you bring to your team?
I always think of the creative bigger picture. For me it’s not about a licensing deal, it’s about the full picture—marketing, execution, is it a lead generator, is it a brand builder, what are the synergies and next steps, etc. I have a deep-rooted passion for pushing boundaries, which inspires me to think outside the box on how to get people talking about our brands in the most unexpected ways. Never underestimate how inspiration is all around us!
What is something you learned at a previous job that prepared you for your current role?
I have always had a curiosity and thirst for learning, so my experience includes many different departments, including sales and marketing, all of which helped prepare me for licensing. Licensing also fits within my entrepreneurial mindset, as no two days are ever the same. While licensing wasn’t originally a part of my career path, it’s the perfect blend of my passions and an exciting business to be managing. Every previous role has contributed to my success in licensing as the role is multifaceted.
What is your favorite aspect of your current role?
Being able to shine a spotlight on Canadian retail and DTC brands. I am so passionate about Canadian retail and always proud to partner with our iconic brands.
What is one thing you would change about the licensing industry?
I wouldn’t necessarily call this a change, but instead an untapped opportunity. I’d love to see the robust opportunities in Canada highlighted more. Canada is projected to be the fastest-growing country in G7. There is an opportunity to target and grow with these new Canadians, which should be a part of any go-to marketing and communication strategies.
If you had an extra hour in your workday, how would you use it?
The research never ends, so I would use that extra time to research new business opportunities. The more exciting and unexpected it is, the more time needed to ideate!
What is one thing you need to do every day to feel accomplished?
Anything creative—my goal is to always think big and surprise brand fans.
Are you a carry-on or checked bag traveler?
Checked. I tend to always overpack—a fact I’ve just grown to accept.
What do you always have in your suitcase on a work trip?
In the spirit of balancing work and family, I always pack one of my kids’ favorite stuffed animals and take pictures of the stuffy “exploring” throughout my trip. As work trips are always so busy, there isn’t a lot of time to call home. Instead, I send pictures of their stuffy’s adventures on the trip, which is a highlight for them and lets them know I’m thinking of them!
If you weren’t in licensing, what would you be doing?
I would chase my entrepreneurial dreams. I have so many ideas (which is also why I am so passionate about licensing).
What advice would you give to yourself 10 years ago?
Don’t be discouraged by people who try to make you “fit” into a role. Appreciate all experiences, even if it isn’t a role you are passionate about. Each role is a learning experience and helps you on your journey of finding where you excel. Keep being yourself—it’s ok to be different, big thinkers usually are. You’ll find your path! (My career journey is also why I really enjoy being a mentor.)
What are you most excited about moving forward?
I am always excited for what’s next, our business never slows down and our future plans at Mattel are ripe with opportunity. While I can’t share any of our plans right now, stay tuned as there is so much more to come!
