Disney Putting Augmented Reality Behind Force Friday Promotion
Disney is putting augmented reality behind (AR) Star Wars as it rolls its second global Force Friday retail products promotion next week (Sept. 1-3). Products will be available at 12:01a.m. local time in 30 markets around the world beginning in Australia.
The Force Friday II campaign, supporting the release of products tied to Star Wars: The Last Jedi (which launches in December), includes an AR-equipped Star Wars app that can be downloaded starting today from Google Play or the Apple iTunes store (those who already have the app need to update it).
The AR activated via a “Find the Force” graphic on character standees at 20,000 stores in 30 countries; each activation unlocks a character who “appears” with the consumer to allow for photos and video that can be shared on social media. Five characters will be released each day of the three-day promotion (a total of 15). Consumers also can collect digital chips containing information about each character.
Those consumers sharing on Twitter or Instagram using the #findtheforce and #sweepstakes hashtags will be eligible for a sweepstakes with the top prize being tickets to Los Angeles premiere in December. The sweepstakes will be open to U.S. and Canada residents as well as those in the U.K., Ireland, France, South Korea and Chile.
