LIMA Japan To Hold Global Licensing Forum: International Perspectives on Japanese Licensing
LIMA Japan will hold a two-hour afternoon forum on how the Japanese licensing business is viewed from an international perspective on Tuesday 17th November at the Tokyo University of Science’s Porta Kagurazaka Building.
Japanese content licensing is an important area of the Japanese government’s “Cool Japan” initiative, the global market export strategy that has been gaining importance in recent years. However in practice, while there are more Japanese companies entering international markets, cultural and business practice differences can cause difficulties and challenges not usually encountered by Japanese doing business amongst themselves.
This forum will examine how Japanese licensing business is looked at from an international standpoint, see what gaps exist when doing business with overseas companies, and discuss appropriate responses and tactics. Licensing professionals made up of Japanese who have worked overseas and Japan-based foreigners will examine these issues.
The forum will kick off with a guest speaker, Mr. Daizo Suzuki, vice-president of d-rights, Inc., an integrated animation production and distribution company with a library of titles including Beyblade and Scan2Go, making a presentation entitled “A Japanese Person Engaged in Licensing and Contents Business Overseas”. Suzuki, who worked in the U.S. in the 1990’s and became the key driver in the company’s success internationally, will share his experiences and thoughts.
The presentation will be followed by a group of international Japan residents who are actively engaged in licensing discuss their views and comparisons of industry practice in Japan, their countries of origin and international markets in general.
A networking party will follow.
The forum will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and the party, at a separate venue, from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.
The forum is free for LIMA members and JPY1,000 for non-members. The party will cost between JPY5,000 to JPY6,000. Pre-registration no later than Friday 23rd October is required. Due to the venue size, attendance will be limited to the first 40 registrants.
