Lionsgate Moving Quickly on La La Land

Lionsgate Entertainment will launch a stylebook for La La Land next month with a goal of having first products available for the property’s live tour this summer, Lionsgate’s Sheila Clark tells us. The “La La Land in Concert: A Live-to-Film Celebration” kicks off at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on May 26-27 and will continue with stops in five U.S. cities and five countries. The live show features a 100-piece orchestra, choir and jazz ensemble.

Lionsgate didn’t have consumer product plans in place when the movie was first released in late December, but began assembling them after getting requests from retailers for merchandise in mid-January, says Clark. The merchandise will first focus on apparel before adding stationery, posters and accessories.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate is taking over the licensing business for the “Ash vs. Evil Dead” series from Striker Entertainment following its acquisition of Starz, which owned the merchandise rights. It expects to have new licensed products shipping in time for the series’ third season in November, says Clarke.

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” is the only Starz-related property so far for which Lionsgate is handling licensing. Starz didn’t control the merchandise rights to many of its hit shows, including “Outlander,” which is owned by Sony. Lionsgate also will move forward with a licensing program for director Tyler Perry’s “Medea” series after buying the rights to it from Perry last year.
