People Profile: Michele Samion, Licensing Design Director for Spin Master

The global licensing community is powered by an incredible group of professionals whose diverse backgrounds and creative energy drive innovation and excellence. Each week we’re profiling one of these professionals in this ongoing series.

How did you get into licensing (or how did licensing find YOU😊)?

While graduating university, one of my classmates heard that Disney was looking to fill a six-month graphic design stint. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to work for the House of Mouse as I had always been a huge Disney fan! Those six months quickly flew by and became a full-time position. That’s when I learned about the wonderful world of licensing and consumer products. Being on a lean and nimble Canadian team afforded me opportunities to be the creative lead on national marketing campaigns, retail marketing and product development. I’m grateful for the vast experiences during my time there, which lead me to where I am now—and of course for my friend who referred me!

What’s a “typical” day in your current position?

Never boring to say the least! I love that there are so many facets we get to touch upon. From product development, line/category reviews, researching trends, style guide creation, brainstorms and marketing, every day is exciting and fun as we extend play patterns and storytelling from both established and upcoming franchises into consumer products.

What’s your biggest personal and professional accomplishment?

It was awesome to have my t-shirt design and statue selected from Disney artists around the globe to be included in the Uniqlo Mickey 100 collection. At the time, my daughter and I were obsessed with donuts and sprinkles alike, which inspired my design using our favourite yummy treats. I was in awe several years later when my friend returning from vacation had surprised me with a picture of my shirt still selling in Japan’s Uniqlo stores!

What are the most significant trends or changes that you’ve seen in the business in recent years?

The pandemic has changed our way of life as we know it. WFH, ZOOM, closures and reopenings, rising costs, and supply chain issues have pushed everyone to be more flexible, as well as boosted their creativity in finding solutions. The time spent online and the need for a virtual escape has amplified the growth of the metaverse and opportunities to reach consumers there. Take NFTs, for example. They’ve been around since 2014 but only really exploded, landing on everyone’s radar and becoming a buzzword in 2021. As more regions open up and we figure out the ‘new normal’ and varying comfort levels, it will be interesting to see the balance between online and in-person experiential marketing executions.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received?

When I first started working, my boss offered some sage advice that I will always remember: “As urgent projects come up, it’s important to remember the difference between rush and expedite.” It’s easy to get caught up in the pressure of tight deadlines but it’s best not to rush through, rather prioritize it to receive the time and attention it deserves.

If you weren’t in licensing, what would you be doing now?

Hmmm…straight out of school, I thought I would be starting my career in web design and new media. However, over the years I’ve discovered my passion for cooking and perhaps I’d be a chef, creating delicious meals that delight the senses, sharing recipes and documenting my dishes along the way.
