People Profile: Olivia Wiggett, Commercial Manager at The Point.1888
The global licensing community is powered by an incredible group of professionals whose diverse backgrounds and creative energy drive innovation and excellence. Each week we’re profiling one of these professionals in this ongoing series.
How did you get into licensing (or how did licensing find you)?
I joined this wonderful industry back in 2018 as an apprentice. I started my journey at The Point 1888 as Brand Executive Apprentice after sixth form, working on a huge mix of brands right from the start such as Team GB, LOL Surprise, and Battersea Cats & Dogs Home to name a few. I feel very lucky to have found the industry, and I can safely say I have never looked back!
What’s a “typical” day in your current position?
It would be hard to say a typical day as no two days are the same! As manager of hardlines, a lot of my time is spent communicating with my wonderful licensees and brand owners, and brainstorming with the team internally. If I’m not working from my little home office then I’ll be heading into London or driving to visit licensees, brand owners, and the team.
What’s your biggest personal or professional accomplishment?
My biggest personal achievement would be when my boyfriend and I bought our first home after years of saving together. From a professional perspective, I was a finalist for the Licensing International Rising Star award in 2021, which was fantastic for my career growth and great acknowledgement from the industry.
What are the most significant trends or changes that you’ve seen in the business in recent years?
We’re seeing how important sustainability is becoming in the current climate and we work closely with our licensees and brand owners to ensure we are delivering this at retail. Another change in business, I think, would be the working from home movement. These days, it’s rarer to be in the office than to be at home! We have always worked flexibly, but it’s great to see other companies coming on board that movement.
What keeps you up at night? What’s your biggest challenge these days?
From a personal perspective, I’d say my biggest challenge at the moment is getting used to being a homeowner! I’ve recently tried to change my mindset to “there’s no point in worrying about things you can’t change” and it seems to be working. From a work perspective, I’m always trying to think of the next product concept. In hardlines, there is so much innovation happening and I’m always thinking outside the box!
In your opinion, what is the top skill every licensing executive should have in order to succeed?
I think a positive, receptive attitude is the most important thing in this industry. You must be willing to listen and learn, meet as many people as possible, ask all the questions, and soak it all up like a sponge. The industry is extremely friendly, and you soon learn that most people will help you and be willing to guide you, so lean on these people when you need to!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, or what’s your favorite quote?
My favourite quote is one that a grandparent said to me when I used to be a worrier: “Most things you worry about, never happen.” Since hearing this, I have worried a lot less about things than I used to.
What is your favorite licensing deal of all time? (It doesn’t have to be one that was signed by you.)
My favourite licensing deal of all time would have to be the range of adaptive costumes created by Rubies. The range is amazing and is specifically designed for children with limited mobility, to give all children the ability to participate in role play and dress up, which I think is so important. They have really considered and thought through the product development, ensuring the product is as easily accessible as it can be.
If you weren’t in licensing, what would you be doing now?
I have no idea what I’d be doing now, I fell into licensing when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and thank goodness I did! I have my own dog boarding business, so maybe something with animals.
The last licensed product I bought was…
A Harry Potter jigsaw puzzle!
