People Profile: Scotty Frantz, Licensing Manager at NFL Players Inc.
The global licensing community is powered by an incredible group of professionals whose diverse backgrounds and creative energy drive innovation and excellence. Each week we’re profiling one of these professionals in this ongoing series.
How did you get into licensing (or how did licensing find you)?
I applied for an internship at NFL Players Inc. in licensing (not really knowing exactly what it was) during the middle of the pandemic in 2020. The internship never actually happened, but the team at NFL Players Inc. encouraged me to apply for a coordinator role they had open at the time. I ended up getting that coordinator role, and the rest is history!
What’s a “typical” day in your current position?
No day is the same, which is exciting! I would say much of the day is spent interacting with the 65+ licensees I manage. If not interacting with licensees, I am spending time on utilization of marketing commitments, licensees’ royalty reporting, licensee integration at NFLPA events, or working to smooth out processes and resource documents for internal and external parties.
What’s your biggest personal or professional accomplishment?
Receiving my full-time job offer at NFLPA! It felt like years of hard work had finally paid off, and I just remember feeling incredibly proud of myself.
What are the most significant trends or changes that you’ve seen in the business in recent years?
One trend that has had a huge impact in the sports licensing world is hot market items, which I have had the privilege of being involved in directly. An NFL player makes an amazing play Sunday afternoon, and his fans can buy a t-shirt of that moment on Monday morning—it is the best!
What keeps you up at night? What’s your biggest challenge these days?
How to manage +65 licensees in a proactive way to promote sales of licensed product, which brings incremental revenue to NFL players.
In your opinion, what is the top skill every licensing executive should have in order to succeed?
Interpersonal skills. As a licensor, you want each of your licensees to feel as if they are the most important licensee!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, or what’s your favorite quote?
You win or you learn.
What is your favorite licensing deal of all time? (It doesn’t have to be one that was signed by you.)
I am a big sneaker guy, so it would have to be one of the many Nike brand collaborations in the sneaker space. The Nike SB x Grateful Dead Dunk Low Pro is one of my favorites!
If you weren’t in licensing, what would you be doing now?
I would be a sports agent or sports commentator.
The last licensed product I bought was…
Dak Prescott golf balls from TaylorMade!
