Schmaltz Brewing Renews for Star Trek, Readies New Lines

Schmaltz Brewing Co. is preparing new lines of Star Trek-themed beer, says CEO Jeremy Cowan.

The company also signed a three-year renewal of its agreement with CBS that will allow it to develop beer based on the “Star Trek: Discovery” series on CBS All Access service, and on a new as-yet-unnamed series that will feature actor Patrick Stewart reprising his role of Jean Luc Picard.  Schmaltz first signed with CBS in 2015.

Schmaltz typically has made Star Trek beer in three to four production runs annually in batches ranging from “several hundred” to 2,000 cases, depending on the popularity of the specific series or film, says Cowan. Schmaltz switched to contract brewers after selling its plant near Buffalo, NY  to Singlecut Brewing Co. in May.

Schmaltz also reached an agreement with distributor Artisanal Brands, whose network of 15 reps will sell the Star Trek beer along with the company’s own He’brew, Alphabet City and 518/838 brands. The Star Trek beer has been sold through Cost Plus World, Total Wine, Whole Foods and other retailers, says Cowan.
