Sears Holdings’ filed for bankruptcy today in the face of crushing debt and tightened credit terms.

The 866-store company, which will close another 142 stores as part of its reorganization, has several DTR licensing pacts, and in fact specifically mentioned those for for Joe Boxer (Iconix), Route 66 (Tempting Brands) and Jacklyn Smith (Jacklyn Smith International) in its filing. It most recently launched a Jacklyn Smith ready-to-wear collection in May. It also previously had DTRs with Iconix for the Cannon and Bongo brands, both of which were made non-exclusive wholesale agreements earlier this year.

The company, which had $6.9 billion in assets and $11.3 billion in liabilities as of Aug. 4 and $5.6 billion in debt, lists Stanley Black & Decker (SBD) among its top creditors ($5.8 million). SBD purchased the Craftsman brand from Sears last year and is in the midst of launching new products at Lowe’s and Ace Hardware stores. Sears Holdings is to receive royalty payments of 2.5-3.5 percent of sales under a 15-year agreement. Sears also has been seeking a buyer for Kenmore with Sears CEO Edward Lampert’s ESL Investments hedge fund having bid $400 million for the brand in August.

Sears has struggled for many years. It merged with Kmart in 2004, but has closed hundreds of stores in recent years amid mounting debt, $1.7 billion of which is due during the next two years. Vendors also reduced credit in recent years and increasingly required cash-in-advance payments, Sears Chief Financial Officer Robert Reicker said in a statement accompanying the bankruptcy filing.

Top consumer products creditors are Whirlpool ($23.4 million), Frigidaire/Electrolux ($18.6 million), Daewoo Electronics America ($15.1 million) and Samsung Electronics America ($8 million).
