XYZPrinting Weighs Licensed Characters For 3D Printers

What is old is new again. 3D printer supplier XYZPrinting is seeking character licensing agreements as moves to expand the retail market for its da Vinci Jr. models, says Frank Peng, Sales and Marketing Manager. The printer is being sold through 650 Barnes and Noble stores and 95 Best Buy locations as well as online through Amazon, Michaels Stores and others, says Peng. The printer is packaged with filament and additional spools are priced at $25.

This isn’t the first time 3D printer suppliers have courted the licensing industry. MakerBot opened three retail stores in 2014 and signed licensing agreements with Sesame Street Workshop and Ugly Doll to produce figures based on those properties. “We are looking into licensed IP because we have a lot of volume and in our business it’s all about characters and figurines,” says Peng.
