People Profile: Laura Pfeffer, VP of Licensing, Horizon Group USA
The global licensing community is powered by an incredible group of professionals whose diverse backgrounds and creative energy drive innovation and excellence. Each week we profile one of these professionals in this ongoing series.
How did you get into licensing (or how did licensing find you)?
After graduating from college, a family friend who was in the licensing business suggested that a career in licensing might be something I would enjoy. When he described what a career in licensing would be like, I decided to give it a try. Ever since I was a young child, cherishing my first Hello Kitty stationery set, I’ve had a deep appreciation for licensed products. They’ve always been special to me.
What’s a “typical” day in your current position?
One of the things I love the most about my job is that every day brings something new. I am fortunate to collaborate with the exceptional teams at Horizon Group and our amazing licensed partners to bring innovative, high-quality products to market.
What’s your biggest personal or professional accomplishment?
My greatest personal achievement is becoming a mom. I am a mom to a nine-year-old and a seven-year-old. It is the most rewarding experience of my life.
What are the most significant trends or changes that you’ve seen in the business in recent years?
In recent years, product marketing has experienced a significant transformation driven by digital innovation and evolving consumer behaviors.
What keeps you up at night? What’s your biggest challenge these days?
Consumer behaviors are evolving, driven by shifting market demands. These changes are transforming how businesses operate, presenting both challenges and exciting opportunities. Companies must remain agile and innovate their product offerings to meet customer needs in order to thrive.
In your opinion, what is the top skill every licensing executive should have in order to succeed?
Relationship building is crucial. Establishing strong, collaborative partnerships is key to driving success.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, or what’s your favorite quote?
One piece of advice that has always stayed with me is to lead with empathy and kindness. It’s a principle I have carried with me throughout my life and career. I have seen firsthand how a kind and compassionate approach can build trust, strengthen teamwork, and create a culture where people feel genuinely appreciated.
What is your favorite licensing deal of all time? (It doesn’t have to be one that was signed by you.)
I’ve loved all the Hello Kitty anniversary collaborations. Sanrio did an amazing job bringing together creative partners from different industries to celebrate Hello Kitty’s milestone. They curated unique collections and limited-edition products that captured the character’s charm while appealing to fans of all ages. These collaborations truly showcased how licensing can create exciting, immersive experiences that connect people around a shared love for a beloved brand.
If you weren’t in licensing, what would you be doing now?
I would most likely be working in the fashion industry.
The last licensed product I bought was…
Minecraft Legos for my son, who is a huge Minecraft fan!
