Desk Details: Ben Thompson, CEO of Storyland Locations
The global licensing community is guided by an incredible group of senior executives whose diverse backgrounds and creative energy drive innovation and excellence. Each month, we’re profiling one of these professionals in this ongoing series.
How do you start your day?
Usually, in the gym. I work out three times a week and if I’m not lifting something heavy and putting it down again, I’ll be on the treadmill for an hour watching The Bear, Vikings, Squid Game or something similar.
What’s one item you always need on your desk?
My notebook. I’ve been making notes in pencil on my little black notebooks for 25 years. I have like 100 of them tucked away in cupboards…
What unique skill or characteristic do you bring to your team?
Drive for results.
What is something you learned at a previous job that prepared you for your current role?
At Disney I learned about the power of strategic and cultural alignment. Getting everybody in the organization thinking and acting in the same direction, trying to develop and maintain the same culture with the same objectives. This was in the context of what Diego Lerner called “One Vision, One Voice.”
What is your favorite aspect of your current role?
The freedom I have to operate, to develop the deals and the business that I am enthusiastic about.
What is one thing you would change about the licensing industry?
I think I would probably change the name! Licensing is quite a transactional word, and it suggests a one-way interaction between the licensor and the licensee, which is not reflective of the reality. This is the most collaborative industry I’ve ever worked in—what if we called it the “(brand) collaboration industry.”
If you had an extra hour in your workday, how would you use it?
I would build LEGO® sets while allowing my mind to wander freely and think about new business ideas.
What is one thing you need to do every day to feel accomplished?
I need to move one of the many projects I’m working on forward in some way, a small but meaningful win every day makes the difference.
Are you a carry-on or checked bag traveler?
Carry-on all the way.
What do you always have in your suitcase on a work trip?
Apart from my notebook, you mean? My Diptyque leather wallet with all my chargers and connectors, of course!
If you weren’t in licensing, what would you be doing?
I would be doing what I do but within another industry, probably consumer goods. When I moved to Disney, I had the opportunity to stay at Mars and be promoted into a bigger role, which I would have loved and most likely thrived in. But it would not have broadened my mind and perspective in the way that Disney did.
What advice would you give to yourself 10 years ago?
Be the absolute best you can be at the job you have today.
What are you most excited about moving forward?
Perfecting the art of LBE development.
