Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media wins Governors Award at 2022 Emmys

During last night’s 74th Emmy Awards, the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media (GDIGM) was awarded the Governors Award. The Governors Award is presented to an individual or organization “that has made a profound, transformational, and long-lasting contribution to the arts and/or science of television.” GDIGM‘s mission is to “create gender balance, foster inclusion and reduce negative stereotyping in family entertainment media” and is the only global research organization dedicated to the cause. They are also “the only public data institute to consistently analyze representations of the six major identities: gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQIA+, disability, age 50+, and body type in Advertising, Film and Television.”

Davis expressed her gratitude last night stating, “we are incredibly honored to receive this award from the Board of Governors in recognition of our work. We know that in many sectors of our society true gender equality may take many years to achieve, but there’s one space where parity can be reached virtually overnight: on screen.”
