In Transit with Marianne James, SVP of Global Licensing at Hasbro
The global licensing community is constantly on the move, forming connections and sharing insights at trade shows around the world. In this ongoing series, we catch a senior executive in transit to ask them for their travel tips and their best advice to take full advantage of industry events.
What are your essentials when travelling for work?
For me, it’s all about staying connected and comfortable. I always pack a portable charger, my laptop and a printed version of my calendar—sometimes it’s just easier to see everything laid out. I also bring snacks and a reusable water bottle. It’s not always easy to find time for a proper meal during show days, so being prepared makes all the difference.
What is your best tip for navigating a busy show floor?
Have a plan, but stay flexible. I like to start the day with a clear sense of who I need to see and where I need to be, but some of the best conversations happen in the unexpected moments. And don’t forget to jot down quick notes after key meetings—it’s amazing how much you can forget by the end of the day.
What do you always have with you at a conference?
A notebook and a pen. No matter how digital we get, there’s something about writing things down in the moment that really helps ideas stick.
What is something you want to accomplish by the end of every trade show?
It’s always about the people. If I’ve strengthened relationships or built trust—whether with a retailer, a new contact, or someone on our team—that’s what makes the time worthwhile.
What do you read or watch on the trip home to unwind after an event?
It depends on how much energy I’ve got left! Sometimes it’s a good podcast or something light to read—anything that helps me switch off. Other times, I’ll watch a film I’ve had queued up for a while. If I’m really worn out, a quiet nap with a proper eye mask is the best recovery plan.
