In Transit with Maura Regan, President of Licensing International
The global licensing community is constantly on the move, forming connections and sharing insights at trade shows around the world. In this ongoing series, we catch a senior executive in transit to ask them for their travel tips and their best advice to take full advantage of industry events.
What are your essentials when travelling for work?
Essentials include a laptop, iPad, computer chargers for all, headphones, business cards, a hard copy of my meeting schedule in case technology fails me, index cards (old school, I know), personalized thank you cards, running gear, and snack—nuts, raisins, oatmeal packets, Twizzlers, and Swedish Fish. I pack it all in a small, lightweight carry-on suitcase with good wheels.
What is your best tip for navigating a busy show floor?
Plan ahead and wear comfortable shoes! Study the floor plan and know who you want to meet so that, when possible, you can schedule meetings in adjacent locations. Have your name badge prominent—people don’t always remember names and companies (I know I don’t), and it makes it easier for everyone.
What do you always have with you at a conference?
Business cards, a phone and computer charger, comfortable shoes, a notebook and pens, two pairs of glasses, and a light shawl—the rooms are always freezing.
What is something you want to accomplish by the end of every trade show?
I want to have defined action items as a follow up.
What do you read or watch on the trip home to unwind after an event?
A good novel (something non-business) and crappy movies.
