Mego Readies Expanded Distribution
With a third wave of its licensed classic action figures launching at Target this week, Mego Corp. plans to expand distribution to other retailers by year-end, says Mego’s Kris Lynch.
The new figures – Woody Boyd (TV series “Cheers”), Chachi (“Happy Days”, Lon Chaney, Kiss and others – are part of a series that is exclusive to Target through year-end. The collection, which was designed with input from Target toy buyers, includes eight- and 14-inch figures. Mego so far has released 60 figures.
The new lines represent a comeback for Mego, which was a significant toy manufacturer in the 1970s as annual sales peaked at $100 million, highlighted by a broad range of what were among the first articulated action figures, including Action Jackson, Planet of the Apes, Cher, Wonder Woman and others, before falling into bankruptcy in in early 1980s and dissolving a few years later. Mego has yet to introduce Planet of the Apes product, which among its top-sellers in the 1970s.
Mego founder Martin Abrams, who later formed I-Star Entertainment, revived Mego after the company was featured on the “Toys that Made Us” documentary series on Netflix last December.
