New Peel-and-Stick Technology Enhances Licensed Programs for Leading Wallpaper Manufacturer

It was only a matter of time until the most famous brands jumped into the fashionable trend of peel and stick wallpaper.  RoomMates, the leading brand of peel and stick wallpapers in North America, has been ramping up its portfolio of licensed designs from some of the largest entertainment companies.

“We were already working for many years with all the biggest studios in bringing to market their properties in the form of wall decals” says PJ Delaye, RoomMates’ President.  “Moving these sought-after brands from decals to peel and stick wallpapers was just a logical and totally organic move”.  Especially if you consider that RoomMates is a division of York Wallcoverings, the oldest (1895) and largest wallpaper manufacturer in North America.

This week the company launched a new program of Warner Brothers/DC Comics properties with fresh takes on Batman, Wonder Woman and vintage Justice League designs.  The two companies had already collaborated earlier this year on a successful Harry Potter wallpaper and wallpaper mural program.

RoomMates also inked a deal with Netflix to bring some of their most popular titles to the walls.  A line of “To all the boys I’ve loved before” debuted a few months ago (and is currently available on Target.com) and the company just launched a very unique “Stranger Things” wallpaper.

These programs come on the heel of a steady flow of recent peel and stick wallpaper launches from Disney, Marvel and Star Wars.  It is interesting to note the design angle chosen by the company on a number of these properties.  “There seems to be a pent-up demand for more sophisticated, elevated designs” says Nicole Zeigler, Licensing Director at RoomMates and York Wallcoverings.  “Instead of simply “placing” recognizable character decals across the wall, we aim at reinterpreting the properties with more graphic elements that recall important features or moments of the show or movie.  It may be less “literal” and more “interpretative”.  It’s obvious that the company aims at creating something that, first and foremost, is livable and works great on the walls.

Consumers are reacting extremely positively to this approach, as demonstrated by the sales of this Star Wars blueprint wallpaper, which is not only one of the company’s best-selling licensed wallpapers, but also one of the top sellers across the entire and massive range of wallpaper designs.

“The company plans to significantly augment its range of licensed peel and stick wallpapers and murals in the months and years ahead.  “Parents or fans may have been reluctant in the past to decorate with a licensed character due to the fast-changing tastes of their children, the ephemeral nature of some licenses, and the perceived more permanent solution of conventional wallpaper” admits Delaye.  “All these apprehensions get negated thanks to the non-committal nature of peel and stick wallpaper as it removes in full strips and in seconds with no sticky residue or damage to the wall”.

In addition to entertainment properties, the company also currently licenses with several lifestyle brands (Waverly, Finlayson), designers and influencers (Cat Coq, Paul Brent, Clara Jean) and will be launching in the next few months programs with Celebrity Designer Nikki Chu, Social Media and YouTube Star Designers Mr. Kate, as well as a variety of other top secret projects.

For RoomMates, licensed art, brands, and properties are certainly great differentiators.

Established in 2015, RoomMates is the leading US manufacturer of wall decals and peel and stick wallpaper – and a division of York Wallcoverings (est. 1895), the nation’s largest wallcovering manufacturer.
