Old Farmer’s Almanac Makes Licensing Return
Old Farmer’s Almanac licensed products are making a return to the market after several years’ absence, with plans to expand the brand into pet food, fresh produce, hoses, garden gloves and other categories, says Brentwood Licensing’s Joel Barnett.
SimplyGro will ship Old Farmer’s Almanac fertilizer by mid-summer, while Carpe Insectae is selling insect repellent through the brand’s ecommerce site and specialty chains. Ameriplus also recently signed a license for natural ingredients-based cleaning products that will be available in 6-9 months.
“It [fertilizer] is not going to be a Miracle-Gro but it will still find its niche and it may not be in Home Depot or Lowe’s, but there still are many stores that don’t want to complete in that space and need a well-known brand,” says Barnett, whose agency started representing the brand in 2017. “These agreements are designed to test the concept and packaging and lay the foundation before we do bigger deals.”
Old Farmer’s Almanac, which is published by Yankee Publishing, has a long history in licensing. International Licensing Management (ILM) first represented the brand in 1989 and signed 14 deals, including those for garden hoses (Anchor Swan), organic fertilizer (Ideal Technologies) and bird and grass seed (Pennington Enterprises). An Old Farmer’s Almanac General Store also opened in 2011 in The Outlets at Sands (casino) in Bethlehem, PA, but the store dropped the brand name last year as the deal ended.
