People Profile: Liza Abrams

Licensing International is powered by an incredible group of licensing professionals hailing from around the globe who take time to serve the industry they love. Each week we’ll be profiling one of these professionals in this ongoing series.

How did you get into licensing (or how did licensing find YOU)?
Oddly enough, I was dabbling in non-profit museum licensing as part of several jobs I held, including The Brooklyn Museum. I have a Master’s Degree in Art Administration from NYU and found that I enjoyed the creative licensing aspects of my job more than some of the more mundane parts of my job. From there I went into for-profit licensing, and the rest as they say, is history!

What’s your biggest personal and professional accomplishment?
Creating a global licensing division from the ground up at Sakar is what I am most proud of accomplishing. It was a big endeavor, way more entrepreneurial than I’d expected – but hugely rewarding.

Personally, aside from my wonderful children, I’d say managing a work-life balance that includes self-care, good friends, travel (pre-COVID) and good food and wine! It seems obvious, but not always easy to attain.

What keeps you up at night? What’s your biggest challenge nowadays or what is licensing’s biggest challenge now?
Pretty much everything going on in our world is enough to keep me up every night. But as it relates to licensing, I think the biggest challenge we face in the community is true innovation/newness and retail.

What is your favorite quote?
I’ve heard this quote in so many different places, but it is my mantra and one of the truest things I know: “Life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you react.”
