People Profile: Mandy Emedi
The global licensing community is powered by an incredible group of professionals whose diverse backgrounds and creative energy drive innovation and excellence. Each week we’ll be profiling one of these professionals in this ongoing series developed in partnership with MyMediaBox.
How did you get into licensing (or how did licensing find YOU😊)?
My background is in marketing. After managing several branded business lines across different companies and product categories, I had the opportunity to manage Fruit of the Loom’s licensed children’s underwear division (think: Underoos®!). While it was a very different experience for me, I quickly fell in love with the excitement of inbound character entertainment licensing. What fun it was to marry our great product lines with some of the best properties in the market! After a hiatus from the business world, several years later I found my way back into licensing, this time on the licensor side of the table. I combined my licensing background with my business strategy and marketing experience, highlighting licensing as a great strategic vehicle for our organization.
What’s your biggest personal and professional accomplishment?
My biggest personal accomplishment is raising twin girls. I first survived the infant and toddler stages, and it’s now such a privilege to nurture their growth into strong young ladies. My biggest professional accomplishment is having steered the development of a new brand concept for our organization.
What are the most significant trends or changes that you’ve seen in the business in recent years?
The biggest changes I’ve seen are in the evolution of consumer behavior, specifically as it relates to the blurring of the lines between channels and the growth of e-commerce. These changes have paved the way for new brands in the marketplace and have challenged all of us to think about how we develop and grow relationships with our consumer base. While this is very exciting, this uncharted territory is also challenging, so this is also what keeps me up at night.
What is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is framed in my office: “Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” -Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Rather than direct someone what to do, we can have a much stronger impact by inviting them to join in the journey, illustrating the benefit to them and others. This applies both in business and in life…including parenthood!
What is your favorite licensing deal of all time? (doesn’t have to be one that was signed by you)
I’ve never thought about this before, but I love the question. I’d have to go back to the Coca-Cola rugby shirts that were so popular in the mid-1980’s…I wanted one so badly! Of course, I didn’t realize it as a middle school kid, but that was a fantastic example of brand reach and consumer connection. I’m still thinking about it 30+ years later!
The last licensed product I bought was…
Lego sets, one NASA and one Star Wars, both brilliant executions!
