People Profile: Naz Altan, Licensing Manager at Ground Up International

The global licensing community is powered by an incredible group of professionals whose diverse backgrounds and creative energy drive innovation and excellence. Each week we profile one of these professionals in this ongoing series.

How did you get into licensing (or how did licensing find you)?
I’ve always been an avid media consumer and knew I wanted to work in an entertainment-adjacent industry. I stumbled across licensing when I was doing my Masters in media management and suddenly everything clicked. I’ve always loved both the creative and the business side of things, and licensing turned out to be the perfect intersection of the two. I started by supporting marketing and brand initiatives, and once I saw how brand licensing was the ultimate form of fan engagement, I knew I had found my niche.

What’s a “typical” day in your current position?
Apart from my morning coffee and emails, there really is no “typical” day in licensing and that’s what I love about it. Some days I’m in back-to-back meetings, managing partner communications, and working on forecasts and reports. Other days, I’m reviewing product samples, making sure everything stays true to the brand. I also spend a lot of time researching trends and brainstorming new licensing opportunities—it’s a good mix of creative and strategic thinking.

What’s your biggest personal or professional accomplishment?
Probably finding a career that lets me combine my love for pop culture (especially video games and horror movies!) with strategy and business.

What are the most significant trends or changes that you’ve seen in the business in recent years?
I’ve been a big fan of the rise of unexpected brand collaborations. Brands you’d never expect are teaming up to create viral, limited-edition products that really captivate fans. I also love how the blending of digital and physical products, especially in the gaming world, is reshaping the licensing world.

What keeps you up at night? What’s your biggest challenge these days?
Keeping up with the pace of culture. Trends come and go so fast now, and the challenge is not just reacting to what’s happening but predicting what will come next.

In your opinion, what is the top skill every licensing executive should have in order to succeed?
Adaptability. Things change fast, and the ability to pivot is absolutely key, especially in licensing.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, or what’s your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass: “All goes onward and outward, nothing collapses.” It’s a simple but powerful reminder of the continuous flow of life and that, even when things seem like they’re falling apart, everything will be okay in the end.

What is your favorite licensing deal of all time? (It doesn’t have to be one that was signed by you.)
The Loewe x Howl’s Moving Castle collaboration is one of my favorites (especially the jewel-embellished wool coat!). It was such a smart, natural partnership between two iconic brands that translated the film’s fantastical elements into wearable fashion.

If you weren’t in licensing, what would you be doing now?
I’d probably be working at a film festival or in content distribution—something that keeps me close to storytelling and creativity.

The last licensed product I bought was…
A Star Trek original series t-shirt. Partly because it looks amazing and vintage, but mostly because I love being able to show off my love for Kirk and Spock.
