Retailers Around the World Adjust to the Current ‘Normal’

Retailers around the world are adopting a range of trading practices in the face of the Coronavirus onslaught. Many, particularly in the U.S., have totally shut down for an extended period. A Forbes columnist counts the number of U.S. retailers that have shut all their stores at a previously inconceivable, but now totally believable 110!

A large percentage have somewhat reduced their opening hours to allow for thorough cleaning of the stores, as well as restocking. That’s particularly true for stores that carry food and other household staples.

Several companies also note that they have set aside an hour at the beginning of the day for seniors and others considered to be more at risk of infection. Special mention to the UK’s Marks & Spencer, which will set aside an extra hour two days a week for employees of the National Health Service and emergency workers.

Here’s what we’ve been able to collect from news reports, as well as company websites. In almost every case, companies say they’ll reevaluate their plans as necessary, in many cases in consultation with local authorities. (Even as we were finalizing this article, Kohl’s announced it’s closing its stores at least until April 1.)

Aeon (Japan)
Japan’s largest supermarket and mall operator reduced by four hours the time non-grocery tenants can be open at its 142 properties in Japan. In February, Aeon closed three malls in China in the Wuhan Province during the coronavirus outbreak there, but its five grocery stores remained open.

Alibaba
After suffering weeks of transport disruptions as the coronavirus outbreak locked down Chinese residents, output appeared to be  returning to pre-coronavirus levels as delivery operations returned to normal staffing levels. Alibaba employs millions of delivery people and handles billions of packages daily.

Amazon
Suspended delivery of non-essential products including toys through April 5, giving priority to household staples and medical supplies so that it can “quickly receive, restock, and ship these products to customers.” The categories defined as “essential products” that will continue shipping are baby products, health & household, beauty & personal care, grocery, industrial & scientific and pet supplies.  The move doesn’t prevent third-party sellers from continuing to do business and shipping products themselves.

The company’s same-store sales rose 2.9% in Q1 through March 11 (the day the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic), an increase that by Wednesday was reduced to a 0.4% gain, CEO Joel Anderson said in releasing Q4 earnings. “It is very difficult to determine the extent and duration of this rapidly evolving situation,” Anderson said. “When we do reopen the supply chain is fully stocked. And there’s really not a lot of hurt we’ve got to go through to re-engage our stores and associates and get the doors back open.”

Foot Locker
All stores closed through March 31.

FNAC Darty (France)
Closed all stores in Belgium, France and Spain through month’s end.  It’s offering free delivery of orders of €20 and up made through fnac.com and darty.com

It tells its customers that “ We remain open and ready to serve you through our apps and online at Nordstrom.com, Nordstromrack.com, HauteLook.com and TrunkClub.com—including digital styling, online order pickup and curbside services at our full-line stores, as we are allowed by local regulations.”

The stores open an hour earlier for these shoppers and remained open an hour later for other customers.

Urban Outfitters

Walmart
Effective Thursday, slashed operating hours at its U.S. stores and Neighborhood Markets to 7 am-8:30 pm until further notice. Earlier it had trimmed hours to 6 am-11 pm for stores that are typically open 24 hours.  It also is offering senior shopping event.

Woolworths (Australia)
Opened at 7 am this week for customers 60 years and older with an ID card, giving them an hour head start. Those under 60 years old were required to have a disability pass to get into the stores at the earlier time. Like the U.S., there has been a rush on hand sanitizer, pasta and canned goods and Woolworths has cut the availability of click and collect and home delivery services to insure inventory.
