Rising Star People Profile: Teresa Curtis-Mapes, Senior Manager of Licensing & Business Development at Jay Franco & Sons
The global licensing community is powered by an incredible group of professionals whose diverse backgrounds and creative energy drive innovation and excellence. We profile one of these professionals each week, and in this special edition of the People Profile series we are introducing one of the 2024 Rising Stars Award recipients to shine a spotlight on their success.
How did you get into licensing (or how did licensing find you)?
Licensing found me! During the uncertainty of the pandemic, I decided to take a chance and interview with Jay Franco, even though I didn’t know a single thing about licensing. Once I started learning the ins and outs of this incredible industry, I quickly fell in love with its endless possibilities and the innovative products it brings to life. It’s been an amazing journey ever since!
What’s a “typical” day in your current position?
After securing my non-negotiable morning fuel (a strong iced latte), I spend the first few minutes of the day connecting with my team. Not only do we love to connect on our personal lives, but I enjoy setting clear expectations and goals for the week as a team. The rest of the day is a whirlwind of activity—endless calls with partners, negotiating contracts, researching potential new partnerships, and guiding my team through presentations, emails, and more. My desk often feels like Grand Central Station, with at least five people stopping by throughout the day to discuss something. To unwind after the chaos, I always carve out time for a Pilates or spin class—it’s the perfect way to reset.
What’s your biggest personal or professional accomplishment?
Professionally, receiving the Rising Star award has been one of my most exciting highlights so far. It’s been such a joy to be part of everything that comes with it—sharing my story in this profile, giving a glimpse into a day in my life, and celebrating at the Hall of Fame Luncheon!
What are the most significant trends or changes that you’ve seen in the business in recent years?
One of the most significant trends I’ve noticed in recent years is the growing influence of TikTok. Not only has it become a powerful tool for shaping consumer wants and needs, but it also provides the industry with a wealth of free, real-time insights. Social media has always been a driver of trends, but TikTok’s impact—including features like TikTok Shop—has truly been transformative. These innovations, combined with the rise of AI-powered analytics, have elevated how we understand and respond to consumer behavior, driving demand for exclusivity and faster turnarounds in the licensing space.
What keeps you up at night? What’s your biggest challenge these days?
I think everyone in the industry can agree on one universal challenge, which is identifying the next big brand. While we have extensive data on what works and what doesn’t, today’s consumers move through trends faster than ever and are unapologetically vocal when something doesn’t resonate. Trends tend to be cyclical but, in many cases, we’re left taking calculated risks and hoping they pay off.
In your opinion, what is the top skill every licensing executive should have in order to succeed?
Thinking outside the box is an essential skill in this industry. Whether it’s negotiating rights or exploring new markets, success often requires stepping away from conventional approaches and introducing innovative strategies. This fresh perspective is what keeps the industry dynamic and forward-thinking.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, or what’s your favorite quote?
The best piece of advice I’ve ever received is “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” There will always be more work ahead, but the key is to step back, prioritize, and tackle it piece by piece. Trust me—it works!
What is your favorite licensing deal of all time? (It doesn’t have to be one that was signed by you.)
I’m constantly amazed by how Stanley has transformed their buzzworthy product into sustained success. While it’s outside the category I work in, it’s impressive to see their agility in bringing collaborations to market with brands like e.l.f. Cosmetics, LoveShackFancy, Starbucks, and more. They excel at resonating with diverse consumer demographics, keeping their item universally appealing and relevant.
If you weren’t in licensing, what would you be doing now?
If I weren’t in licensing, I’d likely be pursuing a career in the culinary arts. It’s an industry that’s always fascinated me, and I find joy in cooking creative meals throughout the week—it’s my favorite form of “me time.”
The last licensed product I bought was…
Unapologetically, a really cool Eras Tour hoodie.
What does it mean to you to be named a Rising Star?
Being a Rising Star signifies stepping into a phase where my talents, hard work, and potential are being recognized by the entire industry. It’s a privilege to celebrate my growth trajectory and set the stage for even greater achievements. It’s an honor to inspire others and pave the way for executives who aspire to follow a similar path.
The Rising Star Awards recognize the next generation of leaders around the world for their commitment, passion, and contributions to their company and the licensing industry. This year’s Rising Stars were recognized and celebrated at the Hall of Fame Gala Luncheon in New York City on December 4th, 2024.
