Rovio Entertainment Reports Better Licensing Results

Rovio Entertainment’s operating profit from licensing more than tripled to €1.4 million in Q3 ended Sept. 30 as revenue jumped 17.9% to €7.9 million. The gain was largely tied to content licensing, which rose 33.3% to €6.4 million, while consumer product revenue fell 26.6% to €1.5 million. Rovio is gearing up its product licensing efforts in advance of the release of the Angry Birds 2 film in September 2019.

Overall, operating profit more than doubled to €10.4 million as revenue rose slightly to €71 million. Games-related revenue declined 1.2% to €63.1 million as a near doubling of revenue tied to the “Angry Birds 2” game to €31 million, was offset by an 80% drop for “Angry Birds Blast” to €5 million.

Revenue from Rovio’s only non-Angry Birds title, “Battle Bay”, slipped to €2 million from €5 million. Meanwhile, Rovio’s Hatch Entertainment game streaming service emerged from a beta test and has been formally released in the Nordics, UK and Ireland.
