The Good Doctor Gets Crafty

Dr. Seuss and Colorbok have partnered to create a line of craft products that offer hands on activities for a wide range of ages, available exclusively  at Michaels, North America’s largest arts and crafts specialty retailer, beginning in fall 2010 and expanding in spring 2011.
Research shows that hands-on activities, which allow children to interact with their environment, help further develop basic cognition skills. Dr. Seuss crafts have been designed to engage children in a wide array of activities, encompassing basic learning skills essential for childhood development.
Craft projects based on Dr. Seuss books and characters fit seamlessly into two main tenets of Dr. Seuss, learning and imagination. Through crafts like creating foam masks, assembling mosaics, constructing clocks, stringing together letters, and making puppets, children discover the basic learning fundamentals of touching, seeing, counting, spelling, and imaginative play.
“When we put together the Michaels line of Dr. Seuss products we paid close attention marrying our core tenets as a brand with the developmental needs of various age groups.” says Susan Brandt, President of Licensing and Marketing at Dr. Seuss Enterprises. “To consumers, Dr. Seuss speaks to creativity, education and fun, and we spent a lot of time with our partner Colorbok tailoring a crafting program for Michaels that will resonate with those core tenets and provide fun activities appropriate for children of all ages.”
“Michaels is a top destination for kids’ creative products, and Dr. Seuss and Colorbok bring another beloved brand to our children’s department,” said Michaels Executive Vice President of Merchandising Philo Pappas. “The Dr. Seuss line of crafts features fun, imaginative products that offer developmental benefits for our younger customers.”
Children at different ages need specific activities to help them hone and master their developmental skills, a two year old is not as dexterous as a seven year old for example. Research has defined play patterns appropriate for age group development that Dr. Seuss crafts are designed to mimic. 3-5 year olds are learning basic motor skills and their crafts should have an educational tone to prepare them for kindergarten, such as cutting, folding and story-telling. 5-8 year olds  are more advance in their motor skills and their age appropriate crafts foster empowerment and satisfaction of creating something without an adult’s help, activities like journaling and scrapbooking. Dr. Seuss crafts are designed to provide ample learning opportunities for a variety of age groups, from simple coloring activities to complex sewing crafts.
Dr. Seuss wants to help moms pick the right activities for their children and have added icons on the packaging to indicate what type of skill is learned with that craft. Each of the five icons indicates specific play patterns and learning skills associated with the product.
Instructions for each activity will be developed specifically for children, to help foster the feeling of empowerment gained by independently figuring out how to create the craft. The instruction pages will rely on pictures and simple wording to visually direct the child on how to complete the activity
Children learn in a variety of ways and creativity fostered from doing art and craft projects help build both educational skills and a sense of pride. Dr. Seuss crafts seek to inspire imagination and foster the sense of empowerment gained from creating and assembling craft projects. Through extensive and careful research, Dr. Seuss crafts have been designed to promote satisfaction and accomplishment through imagination and creativity.
About Dr. Seuss Enterprise, L.P.
Dr. Seuss Enterprises was founded in 1993 following the death of Theodor S. Geisel, Dr. Seuss, to conserve and nurture the works of Dr. Seuss by protecting the integrity of the Dr. Seuss books while expanding beyond books into licensed merchandise.  The licensing effort is a strategic part of the overall effort to strengthen and protect the relationship consumers have with Dr. Seuss characters.  Theodor Geisel said he never wanted to license his characters to anyone who would “round out the edges”.  That is one of the guiding philosophies of Dr. Seuss Enterprises.
