ABOUT KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI (1760-1849)
Katsushika Hokusai was a key figure in the Japonisme movement in late nineteenth-century Europe, and his iconic images—especially the color woodblock print nicknamed “The Great Wave”—are frequently referred to in present-day art in both serious and frivolous forms, from sculpture, printmaking and painting to anime and emojis.
Lunar Masterpiece is inspired by Hokusai’s woodblock print “Lilies, from an untitled series known as Large Flowers”, a simple yet life-like portrait of living flowers. Lilies are found throughout most of the world, but the species shown here is native to Japan. The deliberate simplification of both composition and colouring creates an unusually powerful image.
His innovations in subject matter and composition—drawing on a variety of earlier styles from both Europe and Asia–revolutionized printmaking in Japan and, soon after his death, became influential around the world.
The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston brings many worlds together through art. Showcasing masterpieces from ancient to modern, its renowned collection of over 500,000 works tells a multifaceted story of the human experience—a story that holds unique meaning for everyone.
