MedMen Building Licensing Business for Cannabis

Cannabis retailer MedMen will build out a licensed brand business starting with the Woodstock label as it expands to 50 stores from 16 by year-end, Chief Marketing Officer David Dancer tells us.

The company expects to have the Woodstock license finalized next week and have product by mid-year to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the iconic music festival, says Dancer. While MedMen has a license for all of North America, sales of course will be limited to states (10 so far) in which the sale of recreational marijuana is legal.

While the company has its own brands (State Made is being sold in Nevada), MedMen will focus on licenses for specific market segments such as health and wellness, recreational and such demographic slices as males in their early 30s and women over 50.

MedMen, which went public last fall, is licensed for 76 stores and 13 production facilities in 12 states. It purchased Pharmacann for $682 million last fall, giving it 13 locations in Illinois (6), Maryland (1), Massachusetts (1) and New York (5), all of which are being rebranded MedMen. The company will focus expansion this year on Florida, where it has licenses to operate 30 stores, the first four of which are slated to launch in March.
